Hints & Clues: The common name of this tree was derived from the bloom and how it resembles a smaller seasonal plant mostly
found in perennial beds.

Plant Information:  Dark dull leathery but smooth fol. multiple color combinations of  flowers at tips in inflourescense. 

Landscape Use: Use where scent and color will have an impact. Place with other plants will make up for its skeletal look during winter months, drops all leaves and flowers.

 

Growth Habit:  Can grow to 12 ft each direction, best when pruned to tight area. 

Foliage/Texture: Coarse leathery leaves have a dark smooth dull green color similar to that of the rhododendron.

Seasonal Color:  Bloom is multiple color inflorescense as shown above. 

Light: Does best in partial shade.

Soil:  Well drained soil. 

Watering:  Regular garden watering - can put up with some drought if given periodic watering.

Additional comments: A classic garden plant for coastal communities.
